"When I graduated from college, I discovered my father—a 45-year HVAC tech—had better wages and benefits than I would even if I got my master’s degree," says Kip. "I wanted to raise a family, so I got into the HVAC trade with UA Local 250 in Los Angeles."

Kip started as a parts runner and tradesman, then completed his apprenticeship program and spent 18 years working his way up the ladder in the field before moving into service management.

"I always like the constant change and lack of routine,” says Kip. “You’re never at the same place twice and schedules deviate often."

"While I was working on a college degree, I decided I didn’t want to continue to incur debt with no validation of a career," says Jennifer. Her father—fellow Mesa employee Kip Bagley—had always spoken highly of the trades, so she decided to follow in his footsteps and became a third-generation HVAC technician with UA Local 250 in Los Angeles.

"The trades were always promoted as an option by my father and grandfather, as they are both proof of what a successful career choice it is," says Jennifer. "I love being able to work independently and relying on myself and my knowledge, and I enjoy working outside and at different locations—there is something new to see every day."
